Wayne Deane (1952 - 2018), the 1990 World Longboard champion, original Cooly Kid, fearless big wave rider and Kirra point charger, was a revered surfer and shaper who was at the forefront of Gold Coast surfing in the 70s and 80s, carving alongside the likes of Michael Peterson, Rabbit and Peter Townend. Wayne was a beloved figure in the community, a humble talent who chose to become a highly skilled builder instead of professional surfer, eventually turning his hands to shape what are now highly prized surfboards. Over his lifetime, Wayne claimed a tremendous 19 Australian longboard titles including a World Longboard title. An exceptional surfer and big wave charger, Wayne will be forever remembered and respected as the legend with quiet confidence and formidable skill.
