Commissioned by the Office of the Mayor through SWELL Sculpture, this pair of bespoke handcrafted artworks reinterpret the official Office of the Mayor sign and emblem through a distinctly local lens.
Each piece was meticulously wood-burned by hand on kiln-dried Queensland kauri timber, sourced from the southeast region. The Office of the Mayor sign, displayed on the reception desk, and the accompanying gilded emblem incorporate symbolic imagery of coastal banksias, botanicals native to the waterways and dunes, that define the Gold Coast’s natural landscape.
The emblem was hand-gilded with delicate 24K gold leaf detailing, and its traditional inner shield motifs representationally depicted to celebrate the city’s coastal identity, vitality, and connection to place. This commission honours both craftsmanship and civic representation, embodying the balance between nature, artistry, and public life at the heart of the Gold Coast community.
